Project summary
Floriade is an international horticultural fair that takes place every 10 years, each time on another location in The Netherlands. In 2002, the event took place in the village Vijfhuizen, municipality of Hoofddorp, close to the Schiphol Airport. The newly developed exhibition hall has been designed to have the visual appearance of a Dutch greenhouse. The roof is covered with solar modules instead of usual glass plates. PV roofing, orientation: NE and SW, elevation: 18,5 degrees. The PV system is divided into two subsystems. The NE subsystem is connected to two blocks consisting of 2 x 200 kW inverters in master-slave operation. The SW subsystem is connected to two blocks consisting of 2 x 300 kW inverters in master-slave operation. The system voltage is 600 V DC.

Special PV project info
PV architecture and building integrationThe project was realized by the energy company NUON. The installation was turn-key delivered by Siemens. The total area covered by PV modules is 26.110 m2. The orientation and the dimensions of the modules were dictated by the roof-support construction which was already in place when NUON was asked to realize this project.
PV ownershipThe PV installation and the generated electricity are owned by NUON. The exposition hall on which the PV roof is placed is owned by the municipality of Hoofddorp. The project was subsidized by the Dutch government. The generated electricity is fed into the public grid. An additional financial incentive was provided by the municipality of Hoofddorp which has contracted purchasing of 3 GWh of Natuurstroom (green electricity, mix of wind, hydro and solar energy) from NUON for the period of twenty years. This has completed the business case for the investment of NOUN.
Tariffs and metering
As common for all large PV installations owned by NUON, this installation is being monitored on-line. The generated electricity is fed into the public grid via two step-up transformers. NUON sells the solar electricity on the market as a component of Natuurstroom.
