SummaryThe new water works Muehlenscharrn is the result of an architectural competition won by the architect Roland Schulz. The building is located next to a bike path and hiking trail and the Neumühler Lake. Visitors do have an uncontrolled access to the building and its surroundings. The glazed building facade allows them to get an unobstructed view to the inside of the building as well as minimize the interference of the building with regard to an unobstructed view towards the Neumühler Lake. However the massive use of glazing on the building exterior required at the same time to provide sufficient shading to prevent the building from overheating in summer. Therefore the Architect designed with the help of the company Colt International for the glazed part of the southwest façade (2,8m x 50,4m) a movable shading system with integrated PV. The total construction cost of the building and its PV-System was approx. € 2.126.000,-. The building did win several awards, for example: - Landesbaupreis Mecklenburg-Vorpommern 2000 - Architekturpreis der West-Hyp-Stiftung für vorbildliche Gewerbebauten 2000 - Designpreis 2000 Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
